Capturing morning light

Colocasia sp.

Some gardeners will refuse to grow tropical plants in northern gardens because they don’t survive our winters, but I can’t think of any class of plants that better captures morning and evening light. Most tropical plants can be dug up and overwintered for use in next year’s garden as well, so I consider them more of a perennial that needs some extra assistance with winter dormancy.

I can’t imagine my garden without them.
