How many times do we hear the phrase “How could they?” All too often, I believe. But why are we so surprised when someone acts in a way so contrary to our moral compass?
Why do spouses cheat? Why do parents beat their children? Why does an 18-year-old kid walk into a suburban mall with a rifle and start shooting?
Because it’s easy.
For the spouse, it’s easy to go out and find a new fling instead of rekindling a romance extinguished by years of routine. For the parent, it’s easier to beat an insolent child than it is to teach them a real and lasting lesson. For the kid with the rifle, it’s easier to “go out in style” than to face the demons of his impending adulthood.
We are simply a weak species, looking for the easy way out.
